Why We Moved to HostGator from GoDaddy Website Hosting

By Sunil Sheoran on Mar 8, 2011 | Tue

Finally, we have moved from GoDaddy Website Hosting (Delux) to HostGator Hosting (shared) & it took us under 02 Hours. GoDaddy Website Hosting is a nightmare if you are planning to sign up for Shared Hosting (Economy or Delux) with them. Take my opinion, you will be better off ANY WHERE ELSE.

Our website would keep showing “Internal Server Error 500” so often, it piss*d us off like hell. Talking to their customer support is no point either since they are not helpful at all. TechTipsDigital.com was down in morning today for around 4 hours at a stretch, when we raised this to their customer support rep, he said, “system is showing your website to be absolutely fine”. What an answer! They don’t even want to acknowledge there was ever a problem.

We checked with a Reverse IP Lookup tool and found out GoDaddy was hosting around 4600 websites on the same IP as TechTipsDigital. That was the last straw and we decided to move ASAP. The other factor was that GoDaddy Admin Panel is EXTREMELY SLOW and VERY COMPLEX to understand. GoDaddy doesn’t support cPanel also, which is the best web server configuration and management interface for Linux based servers.

Now, there was an option to move to VPS (Virtual Private Server) which is Dedicated Hosting and costs about $20 every month but you should have more than 30,000 visitors a day to justify that. We are aiming to get there but we just started around a month back only, so no point getting a VPS Hosting as of now.

We had heard about HostGator a lot, so finally we decided to take the plunge and host with HostGator Hosting. I used a coupon code I found on internet (doesn’t matter where you get it, what matters is what the coupon code can give you). We decided to take Baby Plan rather than Hatchling Plan since it allows you to host unlimited websites.

Now, as you can see in snapshots below, there are two schemes available with Hostgator Hosting, when used with Coupon Codes:

  • First month FREE and then $9.95 per Month (Use Hostgator Coupon Code: TTDFIRSTMONTHOFF)
  • 25% OFF Every Month, making it $7.47 per month (Use Hostgator Coupon Code: TTD25PCENTOFF)

You can choose First Scheme, if you want to take free trial, there isn’t much difference between $9.95 & $7.47 anyway. But I would recommend that you choose 25% for 12 months in the least, saving you about $40 straight (booking for 12 months is also cheaper than booking month by month). Moreover, booking month by month is VERY RISKY in case payment is not cleared, you risk your website going down.

So, after having moved to Hostgator, we are very happy. Our website has become way too fast on a shared & economy hosting plan of Hostgator when compared to a shared & deluxe hosting plan of GoDaddy. We were able to transfer all the data files, databases and everything else with ZERO DOWNTIME. Thank you HostGator, we love you!
